Bernard Haitink joins Council of Ambassadors of the Netherlands Broadcasting Music Centre
Bernard Haitink has joined the Council of Ambassadors of the Netherlands Broadcasting Music Centre (MCO).
Established in the summer of 2010, the Council of Ambassadors is composed of prominent figures from business and industry, politics and culture. The ambassadors promote the MCO’s ensembles, the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, the Radio Chamber Philharmonic, the Netherlands Radio Choir and the Metropole Orchestra, and advise and assist their management and staff.
Less than three months after its founding, the importance of such a council for the MCO became apparent: the coalition agreement for the new Dutch government contained plans to do away with the entire MCO. Bernard Haitink immediately took an overt stand against the plans; one of his actions was an open letter published in the NRC Handelsblad of 18 October 2010. He recently gave his full endorsement and donated his services to the release of a protest CD with recordings of Berlioz’s La Damnation de Faust which he performed in Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw in 1999 with the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, the Netherlands Radio Choir and soloists.
Bernard Haitink started his impressive musical career with the radio orchestras, first as violinist, later as chief conductor of the Radio Philharmonic.
To the profound joy and relief of the MCO and its ambassadors, the government has since retracted this decision in part and will now make a maximum of €14 million available to the MCO on a structural basis. This is seen as the first step towards a vigorous continuation of the MCO.
