Two European PR awards for Burson-Marsteller and MCO

On Thursday 8 December the Netherlands Broadcasting Music Center (MCO) won two European Excellence Awards with Burson-Marsteller and Trouble in Paradise in the categories 'Culture and Media' and best national and regional campaign in the Benelux. The prizes were awarded for the best achievements in the field of professional communication in Europe. The flashmobs carried out by the musicians of the MCO at The Hague Central Station and the Dam Square in Amsterdam were among the winners. They made a significant contribution towards raising public awareness of the quality of the MCO and the radio orchestras and their importance to the national and international music scene.

In 2010 the Rutte cabinet announced plans to close down the Netherlands Broadcasting Music Center. Following the initial stunned reaction, much energy was invested into campaigning in a positive manner. As a result, the proposed plans to axe the MCO were scrapped. However, its budget has been reduced by more than fifty per cent and the Netherlands Radio Chamber Philharmonic faces closure. In addition, the Netherlands Radio Music Library and MCO Education will no longer receive any subsidy. According to the cabinet’s proposals the Metropole Orchestra will have to become an autonomous entity and survive without any subsidy. So the struggle to minimise the consequences of the cutbacks continues.

This award could not have been won without the truly extraordinary efforts of all the employees of the Netherlands Broadcasting Music Center. The musicians of the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, Radio Chamber Philharmonic, the Metropole Orchestra and the Netherlands Radio Choir carried out this campaign under exceptional circumstances. In addition, the Business & Communication department, MCO Education, the Netherlands Radio Music Library and the office staff all worked under high pressure to help realise the campaign.

We are thrilled with receiving the award, although a truly fitting first prize would be the preservation of the entire MCO. The MCO continues to rely on your support!
